Library
From our librarian, Ms. Najma Hussain:
The Encino Charter School Library was renovated and expanded in March 2009. At that time, the collection had about 10,000 items; it has since grown to over 13,000—more than 26 books per student, which is above the national recommended average!
About one-third of the collection supports the school curriculum with non-fiction titles. The rest includes fiction, chapter books, picture books, easy readers, and transitional chapter books. All books are LAUSD-approved and organized according to LAUSD Library Services guidelines.
Accelerated Reader
For the past 12 years, we have used the Accelerated Reader (AR) program. Books with AR quizzes are marked with color-coded stickers indicating reading levels. Students can check out books at their level and take quizzes to earn points while helping teachers track reading progress. Parents can also access AR from home to monitor their child’s progress.
Class Visits
Each class visits the library once a week, and students may also come during the school day, recess, or lunch to change books. I read weekly to TK and kindergarten classes and welcome requests from other grades.
Online Catalog
You can check HERE to see if a book is available or checked out. If checked out, you can request to place a hold. Parents can also check whether a book has an AR quiz.
Library Policy
Students may check out up to two books at a time for two weeks, with up to two renewals if no holds exist. Lost or damaged books must be paid for or replaced with an equivalent copy. Financial hardship may allow for fine forgiveness, but unresolved issues remain on student records. Paperback books cannot replace lost hardbacks. LAUSD elementary schools do not charge fines for late books.
