English Language Development

Encino Charter supports our English Language Learners (also called Emergent Bilinguals) in building strong skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Our teaching follows California’s English Language Development (ELD) Standards to help students learn the English they need to succeed in school.

We make sure all of our students, especially those from diverse cultural and language backgrounds, have challenging and age-appropriate learning experiences. This helps students become confident in English—including the language used in school—and do well in all subjects.

Our teachers use an integrated approach, meaning students learn English while studying math, science, and other subjects. This way, learning English feels useful and connected to real life.

We have high expectations for every student and provide lessons that are both challenging and supportive. We also honor and celebrate the many languages and cultures our students bring to school, knowing this helps them feel confident and engaged.

Our teachers focus on what students already know and use their cultural and language strengths to help them learn better. This positive approach helps every student succeed.
