School Nurse

FIRST AID

First aid is administered by the school nurse or trained school personnel for minor injuries (ie:  cleaning and bandage for scrapes, small cuts, blisters, and nose bleeds).  If an injury is serious or involves the head, parents will be notified and the LAUSD Precaution Regarding Head Injury notice will be sent home.

 

ILLNESS

If your child has a fever, please keep your child home to prevent your child from becoming sicker or spreading the illness.  Before returning to school, your child should have a normal temperature for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing medication.

 

On the day of your child’s return to school, please provide a note to the teacher. 

 

Per LAUSD policy, students returning to school following a serious or prolonged illness or surgery (five days or more) must present a written statement from the doctor indicating permission to return to school and any recommendations regarding physical activity.

 

MEDICATION

Trained school personnel may administer prescription medications under the following conditions:

 

1. Prescription medications must be clearly labeled by a U.S. dispensing pharmacy and contain the following information: (consistent with prescription of authorized licensed health care provider)
 Student’s full name
 Physician’s name
 Dosage, schedule, and route
 How long medication is to be taken?
 
2. Medication must be brought to the office by an adult.
 
3. Parent/Guardian must notify the school nurse or site administrator and provide a new Request for Medication to Be Taken During School Hours when there is a change in the student’s medication, health status or authorized health care provider.
 
4. Over the counter medications, such as aspirin and cough syrup, etc. will not be administered by trained school personnel unless there is a written prescription from a physician. Students are not allowed to have/carry medication (such as an inhaler, cough drops, etc.) THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS.

 

CASTS/CRUTCHES

Per LAUSD policy, students returning to school with a cast, crutches, any assistive device, or stitches must present a written statement from the physician that includes the following:

 

  1. Permission date to return to school.
  2. Duration the student must use the assistive device.
  3. Recommendations regarding physical activities.
  4. Must be signed by the physician.
 

All students with crutches, casts, stitches, etc. will spend their recess and lunch period with a friend in the safety of the office unless the written physician's statement advises otherwise.
